Biodiversity in AustraliaAustralia has a very diverse range of plant and animal species living in its forests, grasslands, mountains, wetlands, seas, oceans and deserts. But not looking after our biodiversity has caused many species to become threatened by extinction. Over the last two hundred years, hundreds of species have become extinct in Australia, including at least 41 animals and more than 100 plant species. Currently there are over 300 species in Australia which are listed as endangered, as well as many more which are considered vulnerable or rare. Australian Academy of Science, 2002.
