Setting up a Reuse Program at School
There are many ways a school can introduce a Reuse Program. Here are some suggestions:
- Create an Awareness Campaign
- Hold a school wide event
- Hold a competition
- Set down practical guidelines
In the canteen:
- Ask students to bring their own mugs for soups and drinks
- Ask students to use their lunchboxes for canteen lunch orders
- Ask staff to use the staffroom plates and cutlery at the canteen
In the classroom:
- Have a “swap box” for items that are no longer needed by students
but are not broken and can be reused by someone else
- Laminate worksheets so that they can reused again and again
- Have a reuse bin where all paper can be reused for scrap, drafts
etc.
- Encourage students to bring objects from home that can be reused
in the art and craft room, like icecream and margarine containers,
cardboard etc.
- Hold a working day to repair and paint classroom furniture and
lockers.
General:
- Set up a school uniform “swap shop”
- Set up a textbook sale at the end of each year
- Set up a “Trash and Treasure” stall at the school fair
- Have a car boot sale on the weekend
- Have a “second-hand” stall during lunchtime
