Reusing in History

Seventy years ago, countries all over the world experienced some very tough years, when there was not enough work, money or resources to go around. This time in history is known as the Great Depression and families all over the world did many clever things to save money and resources. A common saying in these households was: “Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.” They did things like relining coats with old blankets; saving string, old rags, and wire in case they might come in handy some day; and shopping to save every penny possible. Because they had little resources and money they became very clever about reusing all sorts of things.

People today need to change their “throw away” attitude and start to think more about how to reuse resources in their homes, schools, businesses and communities to save resources and move towards a sustainable future.
