RECYCLE
Recycling Aluminum
Some of the world's leading suppliers of metal packaging to the beverage
and food industries are located here in Ohio. A large amount of the aluminum
that Ohioans recycle is used again by manufacturers within our state.
Most of our aluminum beverage cans head to primary aluminum smelters,
where they are mixed with raw materials to produce recycled material
and eventually end up as cans again. Other scrap aluminum, from metal
filings to old lawn chairs and engine blocks, go to secondary aluminum
smelters for recycling.

All aluminum beverage cans are recyclable

Recycling Glass

Crushed glass for recycling is called cullet
|
Much of Ohio's recycled container glass is shipped out of state - some
to Indiana to be used in glassphalt and some to Pennsylvania to be made
into new bottles and jars. The rest goes to glass-making plants and manufacturers
within Ohio.
Some specialty types of glass, such as automotive glass, window glass
and the leaded glass from television and computer monitors, are also
recyclable. Each year, 8,000 tons of this glass is collected in Ohio,
mainly through electronic collection programs across the state.

Marbles made from recycled glass

This
specialty glass must be handled separately from glass jars and bottles,
and is processed back into CRT glass - a 100% recycled-content product.
In Washington County, Ohio, one company has found another novel use
for old glass – by turning it into marbles! The company is one
of the world’s biggest makers of glass playing marbles and uses
around 1,000 tons of recycled glass each year.
