Interesting Paper Facts

  • The first American paper mill was built in Pennsylvania in 1680. It used recycled rags as a source of fiber. Today, paper is mostly made from wood from trees, as well as from recycled paper, woodchips, and sawdust left over from the production of timber used for housing and construction materials.
  • Americans use more than 100 million tons of paper and cardboard every year — 45% of this is recycled.
  • Newspapers hold the best recycling record of all materials. Around 24 billion newspapers are published in America each year. Nearly 70% of these are recovered for recycling into new newsprint and other paper products.
