What are Textiles?, continuedThe main animal fiber used for textiles is wool. Most of this fiber comes from sheep, although it is possible to use wool from goats and other animals. Wool produces a warm and comfortable fabric that is used to make suits and jumpers. Another animal fiber is silk. Silkworms spin cocoons made up of long silk threads. Fabric made from silk is very beautiful and can be used to make scarves, neckties and dresses. Artificial fibers mostly come from wood pulp and petrochemicals. Petrochemicals are made from crude oil and natural gas. Some of these man made fibers are nylon, polyester and acrylic. They are very strong and can be used to make clothing as well as carpet and upholstery. These fibers are often mixed with natural fibers.
