Fisheries – Facts and Figures
- We catch over 5 times more fish today than we did fifty years ago.
- The United States alone catches over 5 million tons of fish and
shellfish from the sea every year.
- Some
fishing nets, called “trawler nets” can be up to 40 miles
long, and 50 feet deep.
- Some fish populations
have been reduced to a tenth of their original size — and are
still getting smaller.
- Many sea animals — like
dolphins, turtles, seals, birds and many species of fish — are
also accidentally killed in fishing nets.
