About the UK Competition
Who can enter
Only students currently enrolled in private or government funded primary schools within the United Kingdom are eligible to enter this Competition. There is no age restrictions and we encourage students in all levels of primary school to participate. Judges will take into consideration the different age of entrants although final decisions will be based on quality of environmental action and website design.
Please note that other competitions will be announced for students in other countries, as further Ollie Programs are launched.
Closing date
The closing date for entries to be received at www.ollierecycles.com is 22 June 2002. Winners will be announced on this Ollie Recycles UK web site on the 5 July 2002.
What students must do
To enter the competition, students must:
- Identify current programs based on the 3R's in their school, or think of a new program based on the 3R's that could be incorporated into the
school.
- Implement or strengthen these programs for a period of 4-6 weeks minimum.
- Keep a record of what happens, for example the amount of:
- Rubbish generated per week for the 4-6 week period or longer if possible
- Recyclable material collected each week
- Organic waste composted or properly used each week.
- Analyse and organise this information.
- Build a web site that describes the activities of the project and what is achieved.
- Use their own words, images and photographs to demonstrate how their school has adopted the 3Rs into their waste and litter minimisation
programs and school curriculum.
- Use the Ixla Web Easy Express software to build the site. This software is available from the Ollie Recycles CD-ROM, or as a download from the Ollie Recycles UK web site.
- Test and evaluate the web site that you have created, and make any changes they think are needed.
- Get approval from the school Principal or a senior teacher to publish the site.
- Publish your new website on your school's website and send the URL address to competition@olliesworld.com OR
- Save your new website as an .alb file using the Web Easy software and email it to competition@olliesworld.com
HINT
- Saving your website as an .alb file - Use the Web Easy Express software, go to "file" / "save as" / "document" and name your website - it will automatically save it as an .alb document.

- Age of student/s:
- Name of school:

- Address of school:
- School Tel, Fax and Email:
Note: Remember the website entry is for a site that presents and describes your 3Rs project. The web site is NOT meant to be about the whole
school and all of it's activities.
Students can:
- Work in class groups, as the whole school, with a group of friends, or individually.
- Submit more than one web site from the same school.
Aims of "The 3Rs in My School" Competition
The theme of this competition is "The 3Rs in My School". Its aim is to encourage students to:
- Incorporate positive environmental actions into their day to day school lives and then showcase these actions on their web site.
- Demonstrate how they have incorporated sustainable waste management practices into their school, and how this has reduced the waste created on
a day to day basis.
- Reduce the amount of rubbish and litter they produce in their school, and to integrate the themes of the 3Rs into a unique web site for their
school.
- Increase their information communication technology literacy and combine this with positive environmental actions.
The role of the teacher
The role of the teacher is to:
- Oversee the creation of the web site.
- Ensure that all conditions of entry have been met.
- Take responsibility for their school's entries in the web design competition.
- Act as the point of contact for their students during the competition.
Teachers may NOT
While teachers may not perform any of the research, design or production of the web site, they may assist students with locating information and
instructing students in the use of internet-related technologies.
Why enter this competition?
"The 3Rs in My School" competition is a fantastic way to promote the good work your school does in the area of the 3R's. You can show other
schools in the UK and other schools and students from around the world, the programs that are unique to your school, such as recycling campaigns and re-using and reducing activities.
