What Is a Wormery?

Imagine a special garbage-eating machine. It’s called a worm! Worms can help to break down your organic waste faster than a compost heap can. And the decomposed material that they leave behind, called ‘castings’, is a great garden fertiliser.

It’s simple to make your own wormery at home, or at school. And it doesn’t take up too much room or make much mess. You can’t use ordinary earthworms though. You need special compost worms, which you can buy easily.

You can make a small wormery in a bin, the size of a regular bucket. A wormery is a great idea because it reduces the amount of garbage we throw away – and it means you can have thousands of pet worms!
